Medical Marijuana

Washington, D.C. – A new Mason-Dixon survey of 1,000 likely voters has some surprising number. Nearly three-quarters of Americans and more than two-thirds of Republicans believe federal officials should respect state laws on medical marijuana.

Steve Fox, director of government relations for The Marijuana Policy Project, told the Huffington Post,

“What the results of this survey show is that there is absolutely no political justification for what President [Barack] Obama is doing with respect to medical marijuana laws. Across the board … there is extremely strong support for respecting state medical marijuana laws.”

Medical Marijuana is currently legal in 16 states and the District of Columbia. Federal law currently does not recognize its legality in any State, even those that have passed legalization laws for medical use. Federal agencies have ramped up enforcement actions against dispensaries of medical marijuana but growing evidence shows they pay for it in November when the nation votes.

The survey asked voters if President Obama should leave medical marijuana alone, or use federal agencies to go after offenders. The data says, 74 percent of voters nationally said the president should respect state laws, 15 percent said he should prosecute in accordance with federal law and 11 percent weren’t sure.

Fox noted, the survey question specifically mentions that some states allow for the regulated cultivation and sale of medical marijuana and the more sympathetic term, “patient,” was never even used.

Non-intervention polled well across parties and demographics, with 75 percent of Democrats, 67 percent of Republicans and 79 percent of independents signaling their support for a hands-off federal approach to state medical marijuana laws. It also was also broadly supported across racial groups, with 73 percent of whites, 73 percent of Hispanics and 81 percent of blacks in favor of non-intervention. The only caveat to the numbers is that 71 percent of respondents were white so the numbers for minorities may be off.

The poll comes as President Obama’s government has launched unprecedented raids on pot dispensaries, mostly in California. According to data compiled by Americans for Safe Access. a pro marijuana advocacy organization, since October 2009, the Justice Department has conducted more than 170 aggressive SWAT-style raids in nine states that allow medical marijuana, resulting in at least 61 federal indictments.

I wonder why he turned his back on mmj? The raids on mmj really opened my eyes to slick politicians like obama. He has taken the cannabis vote for granted. What a fool.

B) Thanks Jason for that info. What I think we need to do, and I have absolutely no suggestions for this, is to get the Fed. Gov. from doing their hostile take overs and arrests. This to me is appalling:angry:
What I am afraid is happening is that yes they have state legislation that is making mmj legal, but, the raids continue once the states get their dispensaries up and running. This takes so much of the medical cannabis away from prospective patients. This mmj is different than the rest of the junk on the streets laced with who knows what, and puts the mmj market back to the black market. Which we all know is cartel operated. This is sooooo bad for the consumer. It is backwards as far as I am concerned. We need to put the fight not into state legislation, as much as to get the federal government out of the picture and get them to legalize. I know we are all hopeful that NC would be a legal state, but, it does not promise us our meds, until the feds get out of it. If anyone has an idea how to get MMJ out of the hands of feds, please let me know. I don't believe that Obama is the only one at fault here nor would Romney be any better at it. The only one saying they want the feds out of mmj is Paul and he is right for sure. If we could get everyone who wanted mmj federally off limits would have to vote Paul in. Unfortunately, I don't think that will happen. It would take all of dems and rep. vote to get him into office. Do you think that is even possible/???? :S Just askin...

Good reply Beccie :) But obama is AG Holder's boss? He anwsers to obama and obama to the american people. But if what people are saying iz that its out of obama hands then it does not matter if Romney is elected. Right?
People cant have it both ways. Another raid yesterday, I dont get it,obama could stop this but he gets afree pass from most americans on this.

When the medical marijuana movement first started I read something that when we had enough states (25% I think )with MMJ or that want MMJ could sue the Feds into changing the law.
I wish I could remember where I read this but it was like 13+ years ago
maybe someone can help me with this.

Yes you are right. If Romney got elected he probably couldn't do anything either. But, without getting into a whole political debate on here, at least Obama said he would. I don't think Romney has ever addressed it and if he did I doubt it was positive. From what I have seen only Paul has said that the laws were stupid on a lot of issues. I'm not saying to vote for anybody at this point. I sure don't want to debate politics on here.

Romney is totally against cannabis use. He has said so numerous times.

The only potentially positive side to voting for Romney is that he states that he believes in states rights. Whether or not he would continue the raids and threats from federal agencies remains to be seen.

Additionally, the Paul organization will be in force at the RNC. They hope to have a lot of say so as to the republican platform. But I would't expect much regarding cannabis to come out of it. The best to hope for would be an administration that leavses the states alone regarding medical cannabis.

I don't think Ron Paul can win it B. but I'm most likely voting for him anyway. I'm beyond trying to play a numbers game with my vote. If everyone who supports him votes for him then maybe it will be a large enough percentage for the other parties to start taking note. They say a vote for Paul is a vote against the republicans, oh well... maybe the republicans will learn. I'm tired of the wars, corruption, federal debt, policy stagnation, erosion of liberty and lying politicians who don't work for the people who put them in office. And that goes for the dems and reps!

That was my thought dh. I want my vote to count and like you say could mean a vote for Ron Paul could be a vote taken away from Dems. I am really not sure at this point who to vote for. It is a quandree. What I am sure of is that we need to get the feds out of the free mmj states to make a difference in the medical cannabis for patients. These raids are terrible for us.
